Guided Day Tours

*As of March 25th, 2020, we are closed for all tours until further notice. Governor Jim Justice has closed all nonessential businesses, including ours, and issued a “Stay at Home” order for West Virginia. We are doing our part in stopping the spread of  COVID-19 while protecting our visitors, staff members, and families. To reiterate, we will NOT be opening for day tours on April 1st until further notice. Please follow our Facebook page for the most up to date information*

Touring the West Virginia Penitentiary

Your 90-minute guided Day Tour will consist of an astonishing history, a touch of art, cold hard facts, and an insight into the justice system. You will walk through this Gothic-style structure in amazement and wonder why you did not visit sooner! This tour focuses on the main level of our facility, and is wheelchair (and stroller) accessible, except for one area in North Hall.  You will visit the recreation yards, both visitation rooms, and the new cafeteria that resulted from the riot of 1986. You will, also, take a walk through our facilities cell-blocks; “The Alamo”, which once housed the most dangerous and violent inmates, and “New Wall”, where you just might get LOCKED UP!!!!!!! Cameras are allowed and encouraged!!

  • Adults:             $14.00
  • Seniors 55+:   $11.00
  • Kids 6-16:       $8.00
  • 5 & under:      FREE

Tickets are available in the Main Lobby/Gift Shop during business hours, and are not available for purchase online. Our tours leave every hour on the hour. Please refer to the hours of operation and calendar below before your visit, as our hours may vary monthly.

Please note that our day tours focus on life behind bars. We discuss facts regarding the day to day life of inmates and correctional officers, reasons behind incarceration, and the history of the prison itself. Some information and topics of discussion may not be suitable for young children.

Hours of Operation

We are open April 1st, 2020 – November 29th, 2020

Hours vary monthly

The front gate is locked, the museum and gift shop will close after the last tour begins! If there is someone in your party that chooses not to take the tour, and it is the last scheduled tour of the day, he/she must wait for you elsewhere, as the gift shop attendant will be leaving for the day.

There is no heat or air conditioning throughout our facility, please dress accordingly to the weather. Our facility will be extremely HOT in the summer and extremely COLD in the winter. Some of your tour will be outdoors. Please don’t leave your animals in your car! Ask the front desk if you can bring them along.
