Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about our Daily Tours

Before you arrive, you might have some questions. We have taken the time to answer as many touring questions that often come up when planning a trip to Moundsville and our West Virginia Penitentiary.

Is the facility wheelchair accessible?

Our regular day tours (Tuesday – Sunday) ARE wheelchair accessible. This tour focuses on the main level. History Mystery Monday tours (Mondays in June, July, and August only), all paranormal events, and our Halloween events are NOT wheelchair accessible. These tours explore areas where the only access to them is via stairways.

Can I bring a camera?

YES! Cameras are absolutely allowed and encouraged. The only event that we do not allow cameras is our haunted house, The Dungeon of Horrors.

What do I wear?

Please keep in mind that this facility has no heat or air conditioning. It will be extremely hot and humid in the summer, and extremely cold in the fall/winter. What it’s like outside will reflect what it will be like inside. Dress for the weather.

Where do I park?

There is a small parking lot adjacent to the entrance for tours. Also, you are permitted to park along the street in front of the prison, just beside the parking lot. We prefer that you refrain from parking on the residential side of Jefferson Avenue. You are also permitted to park in the parking areas located at the South end.

I want to tour, but what can I do with my pet in the meantime?

Please do not leave your animals in the car! We will allow you to take them with you while you’re on tour. We do ask that if they make a “mess” you are responsible for cleaning it up.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept cash, Visa, and MasterCard for both our tours and our gift shop. At this time, we do not accept Discover or American Express credit cards. Tipping is allowed, however, we do not have the ability to add a tip onto your credit card.

Are your tours children friendly?

Day tours have no age restrictions. We do advise that some information discussed on the day tours, may not be suitable for some children. Our paranormal events have set age restrictions. All overnight investigations are for the ages of 18 and over. Twilight tours are for the ages of 13 and up, and Thriller Thursdays are for the ages of 15 and up. Our haunted house is not recommended for anyone under the age of 12.

Questions about our Paranormal Events

Whether you spend 3 hours or all night, the thrills are here. Also, we have the answers to the most commonly asked questions by our courageous guests.

Where do we sleep?

We prefer that you do not sleep! However, if you must take a little rest, you may do so in the lobby or museum areas. This tour is for investigation and exploration of our facility, not for sleeping.

What can I bring?

  • All necessary investigative equipment
  • Cameras
  • Flashlights
  • Chargers and extra batteries
  • Coolers with snacks and refreshments (NO ALCOHOL)
  • Extra clothing/jackets

We ask that you bring all your items in with you upon arrival. The gate will be locked prior to the tour. You will not be permitted to exit the front gate and return. There is ample space in the lobby and museum areas for your items.

When do I need to arrive?

Please arrive on time! Staff will unlock the gate approximately 15 minutes prior to the event start time. After check-in, the gate will be locked and the group will depart for the 90 minute tour.

Is there a smoking section?

Yes. There is a smoking section located on the south yard, adjacent to the brick tables. The smoking area is only available for those who are attending paranormal events, not day tours.

What else do I need to bring?

Along with your ticket, please ensure every member of your team/group has a completed, signed, and dated paranormal license agreement. You will turn them in to staff when you sign in. We appreciate them to be filled in prior to arrival, it helps make check-in more efficient and much quicker!
