QUESTIONS ABOUT OUR DAILY TOURS
Before you arrive, you might have some questions. We have taken the time to answer as many touring questions that often come up when planning a trip to Moundsville and our West Virginia Penitentiary.
-
Our regular day tours (Tuesday – Sunday) ARE wheelchair accessible. This tour focuses on the main level. History Mystery Monday tours (Mondays in June, July, and August only), all paranormal events, and our Halloween events are NOT wheelchair accessible. These tours explore areas where the only access to them is via stairways.
-
YES! Cameras are absolutely allowed and encouraged. The only event that we do not allow cameras is our haunted house, The Dungeon..
-
Please keep in mind that this facility has no heat or air conditioning. It will be extremely hot and humid in the summer, and extremely cold in the fall/winter. What it’s like outside will reflect what it will be like inside. Dress for the weather. Open toed shoes and heels are discouraged for all tours and events.
-
There are two small parking lots adjacent to the entrance for tours and across the street. Also, you are permitted to park along the street in front of the prison north of the parking lot. We prefer that you refrain from parking on the residential side of Jefferson Avenue. You are also permitted to park in the parking areas located at the South end.
-
Please do not leave your animals in the car! We will allow you to take them with you while you’re on a guided day tour. We do ask that they are friendly towards other animals and people, quiet, and if they make a “mess” you are responsible for cleaning it up. We do not allow pets on our ghost hunts (3-hour and 6-hour), our haunted house, or our North Walk tour.
-
We accept cash and all major credit cards for both our tours and our gift shop. Tipping your tour guide with cash is allowed and gracious, however, we do not have the ability to add a tip onto your credit card. Due to field trips and bus groups, we do encourage you to book your tickets online for our tours. All tickets for our paranormal tours, escape room, and the Halloween events are required to be purchased online.
-
Day tours have no age restrictions. We do advise that some information discussed on the day tours, may not be suitable for some children. Our paranormal events have set age restrictions. All overnight investigations are for the ages of 18 and over. Twilight tours are for the ages of 13 and up, and Thriller Thursdays are for the ages of 15 and up. Our haunted house is not recommended for anyone under the age of 12.
-
We prefer that you do not sleep! However, if you must take a little rest, you may do so in the lobby or museum areas. This tour is for the investigation and exploration of our facility, not for sleeping.
